This is a picture of the Amazon river where the Rio Negro, one of its tributaries, meets it.  The Amazon is the lighter, muddy brown color, and the Rio Negro is the darker one.  The two rivers have very different sediments and minerals in them, so they do not mix for a long way downstream.  Our ship crossed right over the line between the two rivers, so we could see the distinct separation between them.
